MOSCOW, Ida. - The University of Idaho volleyball team rallied to win games one and two before cruising to victory in game four as the Vandals (4-3) defeated Gonzaga University (3-6) Tuesday night at Memorial Gym. Idaho won the match in four games 30-28, 31-29, 26-30 and 30-23.
Gonzaga jumped out to an early lead as three consecutive kills by Christina Davis gave GU a 15-13 advantage midway through the opening game. After the teams traded points, Gonzaga took a 28-27 lead on a kill by Natasha Kozen. Idaho would score the final three points of the game the last one on a Brooke Haeberle service ace.
The Zags again jumped out to an early lead in game two leading by as much as 20-15 as Zuzana Tumova had four kills in the game. Abby Cullen put the Zags up 29-27 but again the Vandals scored the final three points as Mindy Marques served consecutive aces.
GU's lead finally held up in game three as the Zags jumped out to a 16-11 lead behind four straight Vandal attack errors. Two more Vandal miscues and two Kozen kills handed the Zags the win 30-26.
The fourth game witnessed Gonzaga again taking an early lead at 17-12 with Kozen knocking down two more kills. Idaho would run off 11 of the next 14 points as Gonzaga had seven attack errors combined with three kills by Laura McCaffrey. Idaho would get two kills by Anna-Marie Hammond to seal the game and match.
Cullen led the Zags with 14 kills while Tumova and Kozen each finished with 11. Idaho was led by McCaffrey and Haeberle each finishing with a match-high 19 kills. Gonzaga takes the week off before hosting Montana State next Monday in the Zags home opener at 5 p.m. in the Martin Centre.
