Box Score

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Arni Pjetursson scored twice and assisted on a third goal as Gonzaga Universty's men's soccer team held off a late charge by San Diego State University to take a 3-2 victory Friday in the opening match of the Diadora Classic hosted by Oregon State University.

The host Beavers downed California State University-Sacramento 3-2 in double overtime in Friday's late match. Gonzaga will conclude the tournament Sunday in a noon match against CSUS.

Gonzaga (2-2-0) took a 2-0 halftime lead as freshman Taylor McCool took a pass from Pjetursson and found the far corner from 20 yards out. Pjetursson's first goal came less than two minutes later, taking a Connor Quinn pass and beating SDSU keeper Brian Barnes at 20:23.

The Aztecs got back into the match early in the second half. Kevin Sapanli took an Eric Wohl centering pass and beat Gonzaga keeper Mike McCarthy from 8 yards at 47:01.

But Pjetursson got the goal back for a 3-1 Gonzaga lead at 58:56, taking a Zach Scott pass and scoring from just past midfield as he beat Barnes to the far post over his head. That spelled the end for Barnes, who was replaced by Tim Edwards.

SDSU pulled to within 3-2 at 85:26, Ryan Curtis scoring an unassisted goal straightaway from 6 yards.

Gonzaga held a 19-13 shots advantage. McCarthy had five saves in the Gonzaga net, while Barnes and Edwards also combined for five SDSU saves.
