LAS VEGAS - Freshman Christina Davis tallied 24 kills Friday night as the Gonzaga Bulldogs (2-4) knocked off the UNLV Rebels (1-3) on the opening night of the Gameworks/UNLV Invitational in Las Vegas. The Zags rallied to win game four before winning the contest in five games, 30-27, 30-32, 14-30, 30-26, 15-10. Gonzaga faces Western Carolina and American University on Saturday in the final day of the tournament.
Gonzaga won the opening game with one of their best hitting games of the season. The Zags connected for a .355 hitting percentage which allowed the team to overcome 20 UNLV kills as the Zags prevailed 30-27 in the opener. Gonzaga attempted to go up 2-0 in the game but UNLV held off the Zags 32-30 after limiting Gonzaga to a .023 hitting percentage.
The Zags committed 14 attack errors in third game as UNLV cruised to a 30-14 game three win. GU was able to push the match to a decisive game five with 19 kills in a game four 30-26 win. In the final game Gonzaga rolled to an early lead in winning the game 15-10.
Davis led all players with 24 kills while Jamie VanMeetren reeled off 16 kills for the Zags. Leiana Oswald led UNLV with 20 kills while Patricia Assuncao finished with 19. UNLV held the advantage in blocks with Michelle Johnson collecting nine of the team's 25 blocks. Natasha Kozen led Gonzaga with six blocks as the Zags ended the game with 15.
