Volleyball Sweeps Western Carolina For 2nd At UNLV Invitational

LAS VEGAS - The Gonzaga University volleyball team improved to 3-5 on the season as the Zags swept Western Carolina (4-4) in the final game of the Gameworks/UNLV Invitational at Cox Pavilion. Gonzaga won the contest in three games, 30-20, 30-27, 30-22, to take second place in the tournament.

Gonzaga had its best attacking match of the season as the Zags cruised by Western Carolina. Jamie VanMeetren had 20 kills as GU compiled a .365 hitting percentage in the match. Christina Davis, Abby Cullen and Zuzana Tumova all contributed double-digit kills for the Zags with Davis recording 12, Cullen 11 and Tumova 10.

Freshman Shawn Paulino led Gonzaga defensively with 15 digs while junior setter Katerina Chroustovska passed out 47 assists in the win. The 47 assists ranks fifth on the single-match Top 10 list at Gonzaga.

The Catamounts were led by Sara Komosinski, Stefanie Peters and Christy Attebery, all three players finishing with 11 kills.

Gonzaga returns to action on Wednesday with its home opener against the University of Washington at 7 p.m. in the Martin Centre. GU will follow that by hosting the 10th annual NorthTown Spikeoff Spokane on Friday and Saturday.
