Women's Basketball Loses Overtime Contest 76-74 To LMU

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's basketball team ( 10-7, 1-3) forced their second West Coast Conference overtime game of the year during a heartbreaking 76-74 loss to the Loyola Marymount University Lions (9-7, 2-2) Saturday night at the Kennel.

The Bulldogs maintained a competitive pace entering the first half as the two teams traded the lead twice and tied the score four times. Raeanna Jewell captured the Bulldogs first lead 7-6 with a jumper at 13:57. The Lions never trailed by more than five as they regained the lead with a 3-pointer from Bryn Britton.

Shannon Mathews answered for the Bulldogs with a layup bringing the game to its first tie 23-23. Triana Allen posted the second tie minutes later with a jumper at 5:47 for a 25-25 game. The Lions went on a 7-2 point run before Anne Bickelhaupt collected four consecutive points for the Bulldogs helping to bring the game to its third tie after Jewell recorded a layup with 2:16 remaining. With the score 32 all, Britton and Bickelhaupt again found the bucket for the games fourth tie at 34-34. LMU would then mount a four-point run that GU would answer within one point before heading to the locker room with the Lions leading 38-37.

The Bulldogs shot a first-half 51.7 percent from the field, 25 percent from the 3-point range and 83.3 percent from the free-throw line. The Lions shot 43.2 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from 3-point territory and 33.3 percent from the charity stripe.

The second half yielded the same dog fight as the lead changed three times and the score tied twice.

The Bulldogs led by as many as four with 16:47 remaining before the Lions took the lead with a 3-pointer from Rosa Bernasconi at 15:45. The Lions led by as many as seven points but the Bulldogs kept them in their sights coming as close as one point before Jessica Malone tied the game and gave the Bulldogs the lead with two good free-throw shots.

The teams traded the lead twice before Malone sank another free-throw shot with 15 seconds left to tie the game at 67 all.

Malone and Jewell kept the Bulldogs in the hunt with all seven of the Zags overtime-points.

With seven seconds remaining in overtime and the score 74-73 in favor of the Bulldogs the Lions went to the foul line. Kate Murray hit her first shot and missed her second only to have LMU rebound the ball with two seconds left. Raelen Self sent up a long 3-pointer to give the Lions the 76-74 win.

Jessica Malone led the Bulldogs with 18 points while Raeanna Jewell recorded her second consecutive double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. GU finished the night shooting 44.1 percent from the field, 25 percent from 3-point range and 81.8 from the free-throw line.

The Bulldogs continue WCC action on the road against University of San Francisco Friday at 7 p.m.
