SPOKANE, Wash. - For the first time this season five was not the magic number for the Gonzaga Bulldogs (4-21, 2-5 WCC) as visiting Portland (13-9, 2-5 WCC) defeated Gonzaga in five games at Martin Centre. The Pilots won the contest 27-30, 36-34, 20-30, 30-28, 15-13.
Heather Denison and Sara Vercruyssen led a spirited Pilots squad as Denison connected for 26 kills and Vercruyssen added 22 of Portland's 82 kills on the night. The Pilots rebounded from an explosive Bulldogs start in game one as GU built a 22-10 advantage before holding on for the three point margin of victory. Portland hit a steady 22 percent in the game two win as the teams traded points before Portland could capitalize in the end.
Gonzaga, led by Christina Davis' 27 kills and .412 attack percentage, fired off in game three. The Bulldogs jumped out the early lead and held on for the win hitting .286 in the game three win. Gonzaga had exploded for a .372 attack percentage in the first game but had to overcome some attack errors to win the first game.
Portland won game four rallying for five of the final eight points after the match was tied at 25-25. Portland was also able to rebound in the final game as Gonzaga had built a 10-7 lead before Portland made the late charge to win.
Lauren Kapstein chipped in 12 kills for Portland and Carlie Price, the WCC leader in digs, finished with 25 digs. Sheena Surplus had 71 assists.
Abby Cullen set a school record for blocks in the contest as she finished with 15 combined blocks. Her 13 block assists tied the school record set by Christine Kubista against Santa Clara during the 1995 season. Cullen's 15 blocks passed previous 14 block efforts by Kubista and Kelley Cunningham. Cullen also had 18 kills in the loss and Heather Signor had 18 digs.
Gonzaga returns to action next weekend as they host Loyola Marymount on Friday and league leader Pepperdine on Saturday night.
