McCarthy First Team All-WCC Men's Soccer

Nov. 20, 2002

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University senior Mike McCarthy became the first Bulldog keeper to earn All-West Coast Conference first-team honors Wednesday as the WCC unveiled its 2002 men's soccer All-WCC squad.

McCarthy was joined by a foursome of honorable mentiuon picks from the Bulldogs - defenders Robert Anderson and Kari Arnason, and midfielders Matt Prichard and Scott Yuska. Yuska, a junior, and the senior Prichard were also honorable mention picks a year ago. Anderson and Arnason were both freshmen this season.

McCarthy, a native of Kailua, Hawai'i, led the WCC in saves/match with 6.07, posted a 1.43 GAA and recorded a pair of shutouts, bringing his career shutout total to 13 for second on the all-time GU list. He was an honorable mention pick as a sophomore in 2000.

"I believe Mike is the best keeper in the WCC," Thorarinsson said. "He is the reason we won two matches and tied another, and he's also the reason we were close in our losses. But there were some good keepers in the conference this year. I'm happy for Mike."

The Bulldogs lost four matches by one goal in a 5-10-1 season that included a 2-3-1 WCC mark.

WCC champion University of Portland and NCAA-bound Univrsity of San Diego split the individual awards. For the second time in his career, USD's Ryan Coiner was named the WCC Player of the Year. Coiner, who shared 2000 Player of the Year honors with Loyola Marymount University's Arturo Torres, ranks third on the WCC all-time goals scored list with 49. Coiner's teammate, Scott Burcar, earned Defensive Player of the Year honors, while Portland freshman standout Alejandro Salazar was tabbed the Freshman of the Year. Portland head coach Clive Charles led the Pilots to their first WCC men's soccer title in a decade and was rewarded with the WCC Coach of the Year award.
