SPOKANE, Wash. - Sophomore forward Raeanna Jewell collected a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds Sunday afternoon as the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (6-5) defeated the Boise State Broncos (3-7) 82-55 in non-conference play at the Kennel.
The Broncos began the contest with a small lead as they kept the point advantage for most of the first minutes as the two teams battled to three lead changes and four ties.
Katie Prichard broke the ice for the Bulldogs when she drew a foul on a layup and sank the free throw to bring the Zags within two points. Prichard than dove on a loose ball and dished it out to Raeanna Jewell who took it down the court and connected with Triana Allen for the layup to make the game 17-all at 12:01. Jewell gave Gonzaga two more points 30 seconds later with a layup as they took their first lead of the game.
Abby Vaughan answered quickly with a three-pointer to give the Broncos the 21-19 temporary edge. The fourth tie in the first 10 minutes occurred at 10:20 with a good layup from Anne Bailey before Triana Allen stole the ball and broke loose with a layup to give Gonzaga the permanent lead with 10 minutes left to play in the first half.
The Bulldogs than took a 13-3 point-run to pull away by as many as 12 points before heading to the locker room with the 45-38 lead.
Gonzaga continued to shoot well in the second half, collecting 53.6 percent in the second-half, finishing the game 52.5 percent from the field; sinking a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe. The Bulldogs held the Broncos to 25 percent of their second half shots as Boise State sank 6-of-24 attempts.
Three Bulldogs shot in double-digits as Jewell led with 16 points and eight rebounds. Triana Allen went 7-for-8 from the field and 1-for-1 from the three-point line as she finished with 15 points, eight assists and six rebounds. Shannon Mathews collected 14 points and five assists. Gonzaga grabbed 15 steals as Katie Prichard snagged a game-high five.
Mandy Welch paced Boise State with a game-high 20 points while Jamie Hawkins added 11 points and five assists.
The game marked the last of the Bulldogs six-game homestand as they went five-for-six at home in the month of December.
Gonzaga heads south for the New Year as they take on the Cal State Fullerton Titans at Titan Gym Tuesday at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs continue action on the road Thursday against UC Riverside at 7 p.m.
