California Rallies To Defeat Baseball 5-4

BERKELEY, Calif. - California (3-4) rallied for four runs in the final three innings Sunday afternoon as the Golden Bears defeated Gonzaga, 5-4, in the final game of a weekend series at Evans Diamond. The Bulldogs dropped to 2-4 on the season and will face Washington State in a three-game series in Pasco, Wash., next weekend.

After falling behind in the second inning on a Chris White solo home run, Gonzaga scored two runs in the top of the third and added a third run in the fifth. John Gebbers drove home Danny Evans with the first Bulldogs run after Evans had singled to open up the inning. Eric Rodland would score the next run on a Kevin Richardson sacrifice fly. Brian Munhall accounted for the Zags run in the fifth with an RBI single that scored Richardson.

Gonzaga starter Errol Simonitsch worked into the sixth inning but was lifted after loading the bases and surrendering a Chris Grossman sacrifice fly. California would get its second run of the sixth inning when Jeff Dragicevich singled up the middle against reliever Eric Everson.

The Zags would take back the lead in the top of the seventh as Gebbers homered to left. Conor Jackson tied the game at 4-4 with a single in the bottom of the seventh and David Nicholson drove home the game winner with an infield single in the eighth. Golden Bears reliever Matt Brown (1-0) picked up the win with six innings of relief while Everson (0-1) was saddled with the loss.

Gebbers and Munhall each led Gonzaga with three hits as the Zags out hit California 14-9 in the loss. Four California players finished with two hits on the afternoon.
