Washington State (3-2) starting pitcher Garrett Alwert gave up a first inning homerun to Gonzaga's (3-5) Kevin Richardson, but that would be all the damage the Zags would do as WSU won a non-conference game 4-2 at Columbia Basin College in Pasco. The teams will conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Richardson's blast staked the Zags to a 2-0 lead in the first inning scoring Brian Munhall who led off the inning with a single. Gonzaga starter Ed Clelland (0-2) would get through the first inning but the Cougars jumped on the lefthanded starter in the second.
The Cougars posted a two-out rally when Brandon Reddinger singled to left center and came around to score on Evan Hecker's single. A two-run double by Bookie Gates would put Washington State up 3-2. Clelland would post five more shutout innings before giving up a WSU insurance run in the eighth.
Alwert (1-0) allowed only nine hits during the game as he posted his first complete game of the season. Danny Evans would account for three of the Zags nine hits while Kevin Richardson added two. Gates, Jeffrey LaRue and Collin Henderson each finished with two hits for the Cougars.
