Cal Downs Gonzaga Baseball In Series Opener

BERKELEY, Calif. - Conor Jackson and John Baker combined to drive home seven runs Friday afternoon as the California Golden Bears (2-3) won the series opener 10-2 over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (1-3) at Evans Diamond in Berkeley.

Gonzaga scored the first run of the contest as John Gebbers drove home Eric Rodland after Rodland had singled and advanced to third on an error. Cal starter Trevor Hutchinson (2-0) would settle down after that allowing only a Kemp Quackenbush home run in the top of the seventh during his eight innings of work.

Bulldogs starter John Gonzalez (0-1) opened with three scoreless innings during his first collegiate start but would get into trouble in the bottom of the fourth as the Golden Bears scored three runs courtesy of a Baker homerun. Cal would tack on two more runs against Gonzalez in the fifth inning and chase the Gonzaga starter in the bottom of the seventh as they scored four more runs on a Jackson grand slam.

Rodland and Kevin Richardson each finished with two hits as the Zags were limited to seven hits on afternoon. David Nicholson and Carson White led Cal with three hits each. The two teams will continue the three game series on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
