Baseball Falls In The 11th To Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine (11-13, 1-2 WCC) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 11th inning Sunday afternoon to defeat Gonzaga (8-8, 2-1 WCC), 6-5, and avoid being swept in the West Coast Conference series at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Kevin Richardson and Brian Munhall each had RBI singles in the second and third innings. Pepperdine was able to get to Gonzaga starter Errol Simonitsch with five runs over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. In the fourth Chris Kelly and Rock Mills each had RBI singles to tie the game at 2-2.
The Waves took a 3-2 lead in the fifth as Ed Montague homered to right field. Gonzaga countered as Nate Gold crushed a ball to left field to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth. A Mills two-run single up the middle ended Simonitsch's day on the mound with five strike outs.
Gold again helped the Gonzaga offense in the seventh as he hit a two-run homerun in the seventh to tie the game at 5-5. For Gold is it was hit tenth homerun of the season and moved him into sole possession of tenth on the Gonzaga career homerun charts with 23. Jacob Barrack (3-1) pitched 4.1 innings of relief for the Waves allowing only two Gonzaga hits. Brent Dayton (0-2) was tagged with the loss despite allowing only two hits and the one unearned run in five innings of work.
Gold and Garth Blumberg led the Bulldogs with two hits each while Duke Sardinha led Pepperdine with a 4-for-5 afternoon. Gonzaga now travels to Fresno State for six games in the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Baseball Classic. GU will play host Fresno State at 7 p.m. on Monday night.
