FRESNO, Calif. - Gonzaga (11-9) improved to 3-1 in the 2002 Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic with a 13-4 win over Liberty University (9-5-1) on Thursday afternoon. The Zags added two more homeruns to their season total as they pounded out 11 hits.
Bulldogs starter Brent Dayton (1-2) picked up the win despite pitching 4.2 innings as the Zags declared a split game between pitchers. Dayton got into some early trouble allowing three Flames runs in the first, but settled down to pick up the win. Kyle Nearhood and Matt Reding also pitched two innings during the win.
Flames starter David Bechtold (1-1) was not as fortunate as Dayton as the Zags scored seven runs over two innings against the Liberty pitcher. Garth Blumberg hit a three-run homerun to account for three of the Bulldogs four runs in the first inning.
Brian Munhall added a solo homerun in the second before Gonzaga scored a couple of unearned runs during a two-run third inning. Jeff Culpepper and Blumberg each added RBI's as Gonzaga scored four more runs in the sixth inning to seal the victory.
Kevin Cave was the lone Bulldog with multiple hits finishing with two. Blumberg finished with four RBI. Matt Hagen went 3-for-4 for Liberty. Gonzaga's Friday opponent and game time will be determined following the conclusion of play Thursday night.
