MALIBU, Calif. - Freshman pitcher Eric Dworkis scattered five Pepperdine hits Saturday afternoon as the Gonzaga Bulldogs (8-7, 2-0 WCC) shutout the Waves, 6-0, at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The teams will conclude the conference series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Dworkis (4-0) worked out of his only jam of the game in the third inning as he tossed Gonzaga's first complete game of the season. In the third Cory Brightwell and Duke Sardinha hit back-to-back singles to right, placing runners at first and third with one out. Dworkis forced an infield pop up by Ty Harper for the second out before Brightwell was caught stealing to end the inning.
Pepperdine starter Kevin Beavers (2-2) also looked sharp in the early going allowing only one Gonzaga hit through the first four innings. The Bulldogs were finally able to break through in the fifth as they loaded the bases on singles by Jeff Culpepper and Eric Rodland. Brian Munhall then cleared the bases with a triple to right center. Munhall would come home to score on a sacrifice fly by Nate Gold.
Gold would add to both his RBI and homerun total in the seventh inning with a two-run shot against Waves relief pitcher Greg Ramirez. For Gold it was his eighth homerun of the season. Four of Gonzaga's runs during the game were unearned as the Pepperdine (10-13, 0-2 WCC) defense committed four errors.
Munhall and Culpepper each finished with two hits for Gonzaga with Munhall and Gold each collecting three RBI. Brightwell had two hits to lead Pepperdine.
