SEATTLE - Matt Reding (1-0) pitched four shutout innings of relief Wednesday night to pick up his first career win as Gonzaga (16-14), swept a two-game series from Washington (12-12-1) with a 7-5 win at Husky Ballpark. The win was the 600th Gonzaga career win for Bulldogs skipper Steve Hertz.
Husky starter Clay Johnson looked sharp in the opening innings, tossing 3.1 innings of no hit baseball to open the contest. Grant Zurmely snapped the no-hitter with a single up the middle in the fourth. He would advance to second on a Johnson balk and would come around to score on a Nate Gold RBI single to right. The hit extended Gold's hitting streak to 13 games.
Washington would respond with three runs in the bottom of the fourth against Gonzaga starter John Gonzalez. Mike Wagner and Bryan Johnson would open with singles while Michael Done would deliver the first Huskies run with a sacrifice fly to right. John Otness and Aaron Hathaway would finish off the inning with RBI hits, Otness hitting a double down the left field line.
The Bulldogs chipped away at the lead in the top of the fifth as Kevin Cave beat out a double play ball to score Kyle Rajsich from third. Rajsich opened the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a single by Sam Hess. Washington would push the lead back to three in the bottom of the inning, scoring two unearned runs on a bases loaded walk and Done sacrifice fly.
Gonzaga again rallied in the top of the seventh as Jeff Culpepper led off with a single up the middle. Hess kept the rally going with a two-out double to right center that scored Culpepper. Eric Rodland would drive home Hess with a single to right to close the Husky lead to 5-4.
Kevin Richardson's lead off home run in the top of the eighth tied the game at 5-5. Gonzaga continued to work the Washington bullpen scoring two more runs off reliever Greg Colburn (1-1). Colburn hit two Bulldog batters and walked one. Hess added an RBI as a ball tipped off the glove of Huskies second baseman Nick Batkoski was turned into a force out as Brian Munhall scored from third. Zach Daniels would get Washington out of the inning with an infield pop up.
Hess led the Zags with two hits and two RBI. Garthwaite, Brian Johnson, Hathaway and Wagner all had two hits for the Huskies. Gonzaga returns to action this weekend when they host the University of Portland in a West Coast Conference series at August/A.R.T. Stadium. Start time for Friday's opener is 2 p.m. and fans will be able to catch the action on KFAN AM 790 as the Bulldogs begin their radio broadcast schedule.
