Gold Powers GU Over Huskies, 12-10

SEATTLE - Gonzaga belted out 18 hits in the first game of a doubleheader with the biggest blast coming off the bat of Nate Gold as the Bulldogs won game one 12-10 over Washington. Gold capped a four-run seventh inning for the Bulldogs with his NCAA leading 31st home run. GU improved to 26-26 while UW dropped to 25-23-1 after the first game.
Gonzaga loaded the bases in the opening inning against Washington starter Jeff Petersen. Sam Hess, Nate Gold and Jeff Culpepper collected singles to set up John Gebbers who delivered a two-run single to left.
Washington knotted the game at 2-2 in their half of the third as they connected for four hits against GU starter Kyle Nearhood. Aaron Hathaway and John Otness each had RBI singles in the frame.
The Bulldogs answered with two runs in the fourth, taking advantage of two Husky errors. Kevin Cave reached on a infield error and would come around score on a Hess double to right. Hess would score the Bulldogs second run of the inning as Washington attempted to pick off Gold at second base and throw was errant allowing Hess to trot home from third.
The Huskies exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead 8-4. Tyler Davidson hit a three-run home run while Tila Reynolds added a two-run blast.
Gonzaga chipped away at the lead with a Brian Munhall solo home run in the fifth and three additional runs in the sixth. Gebbers again had the big with a two-run double to left. Kyle Rajsich's RBI single to right tied the game at 8-8.
UW regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Reynolds opened with a triple down the right field line. Reynolds would score on Hathaway's single to center, giving the Huskies a 9-8 advantage.
Gold helped propel the Bulldogs in the seventh inning as he hit his 31st home run of the season to give GU a 12-9. The home run gave Gold sole possession of the West Coast Conference single-season home run record which he had shared with San Francisco's Taggert Bozied. . Hess led Gonzaga with four hits while Rajsich finished with three hits. Hathaway and Garthwaite each finished with three hits to lead Washington. Kemp Quackenbush (1-0) picked up the win while Josh Conover was tagged with the loss to fall to 0-1.
