MORAGA, Calif. - Saint Mary's (20-21, 12-9 WCC) took over sole possession of first place in the WCC's Coast Division on Saturday afternoon as they sent Gonzaga (23-24, 11-12 WCC) to its seven straight defeat with a 5-2 win over the Bulldogs at Louis Gusto Field. The Gaels took over first place after Santa Clara defeated Pepperdine for the second time in two days. Gonzaga now stands two games behind the Gaels and one game behind both Pepperdine and Santa Clara.
Saint Mary's scored first in the ball game with two runs in the bottom of the third against Bulldogs starter Brent Dayton (3-4). Nick Conte opened the inning with a single and would come around to score on a double by Brett Wayne. Wayne would cross the plate on an infield single by Jason Waugh.
Gonzaga closed the gap to 2-1 in their half of the fourth as Sam Hess doubled to center. Hess would move to third on a Grant Zurmely single and score on a fielder's choice by Kemp Quackenbush. Saint Mary's starter Eric Bowden (5-5) would allow only one more Gonzaga run in the top of the eighth as he pitched a complete game allowing only six Gonzaga hits. The Bulldogs run in the eighth came on Kevin Richardson's 14th home run of the season, but the Gaels had already built a 5-1 lead at that point.
Saint Mary's additional runs came off a Jeff Cunningham RBI single in the fourth and a two-run home run by Brian Houle in the seventh. Saint Mary's out hit the Bulldogs 11-6 on the afternoon as the two teams prepare to conclude the WCC series with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday afternoon.
Hess was the only Bulldogs player with multiple hits finishing 2-for-4. Mark Teahen and Wayne had two hits apiece to lead Saint Mary's.
