SAN DIEGO - Former Gonzaga University outfielder Jason Bay was one of five players involved in a trade between the New York Mets and San Diego Padres prior to the Major League trading deadline. Bay, who started the season with the Montreal Expos before being aquired by the Mets in an early season move, will report to Double-A Mobile of the Southern League.
A two-time first-team All-West Coast Conference outfielder, Bay was hitting .290 with 4 home runs, 19 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 34 games with the Double-A Binghamton Mets franchise. Bay started the season with the St. Lucie Mets of the Florida State League where he was a teammate of former Zags pitcher Steve Bennett.
Along with Bay the Padres received pitcher Bobby M. Jones and pitcher Josh Reynolds from Mets in exchange for pitcher Steve Reed and pitcher Jason Middlebrook.
