BOISE, Idaho - Sophomore forward Annie Hawkins scored two goals Saturday afternoon as the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (2-3-0) shutout the Boise State University Broncos (2-2-1) 5-0 in non-conference action at Simplot Sports Complex.
The Bulldogs collected their second win of the season and A. Hawkins scored her third and fourth unassisted goals of the year as Gonzaga recorded their largest margin of victory since defeating the Portland State Vikings 6-0 Sept. 19, 2000 at Martin Field.
Freshman Heidi Jacobson struck first for the Bulldogs in the 36th minute as she scored from 12-yards out on an assist from A. Hawkins. Junior forward Katie O'Brien found the net five minutes later when she took a cross from senior forward Claire Whitfield.
The remainder of the match was a family affair as twin sisters Annie and Sarah Hawkins scored three goals in the second half to give the Bulldogs the shutout. A. Hawkins collected her first unassisted goal at 49:52 and followed it up with a high 20-yard shot in the 66th minute. S. Hawkins pounded a penalty kick home at 84:14 to record her first goal of the season and the win for the Bulldogs.
Bulldog goalkeeper Ashley Haugen was back in the net after suffering a broken nose during last Sunday's Oregon State match. Haugen collected six saves while Bronco goalkeeper Lindsay Vandenberg recorded two. The Broncos outshot the Bulldogs 10-8.
Gonzaga returns home Friday after a five-match season-opening road series. The Bulldogs play their home-opener against the Portland State University Vikings Friday at 2 p.m. at Martin Field.
