Box Score

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Gonzaga University broke out of a scoring slump Friday, Nick Ascolese scoring just 29 seconds into the match to propel the Bulldogs to a 3-0 non-conference men's soccer victory at Cal Poly.

The Bulldogs (2-4-0) equalled their offensive output for the previous five matches with the three goals in breaking a two-match losing streak, while the Mustangs (1-5-0) dropped their third straight outing and suffered their third blanking of the season.

Gonzaga goalkeeper Mike McCarthy logged his first shutout of the season, recording nine saves.

Ascolese scored just 29 seconds into the match, kicking a rebound off a Cal Poly player past Mustang goalie Luis Trejo from five yards out. Connor Quinn added the second Gonzaga goal, a 10-yard shot off a cross from Scott Yuska, at the 31st minute, and Kari Arnasson scored his first career goal and the final goal of the match with just 67 seconds to play. The Icelandic connection was at work on the final goal, Arni Ingi Pjetursson setting up his fellow Icelandic teammate for the score.

The Mustangs outshot Gonzaga 23-18, including 11 shots on goal, but couldn?t dent McCarthy and the Bulldog defense.

Cal Poly was whistled for 24 fouls while Gonzaga had 21, and the Bulldogs were called for six yellow cards.

Gonzaga travels to Cal State Northridge Sunday for a 1 p.m. match as the Bulldogs are in the middle two matches of six straight away from home.
