NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Sophomore Jesse Servin hammered in the game-winning goal over visiting Gonzaga University with only 36 seconds remaining in the first overtime to give Cal State-Northridge a 2-1 non-confernece men's soccer win at hot Matador Soccer Field on Sunday.
Until scoring the decisive goal, Servin had peppered Gonzaga goalkeeper Mike McCarthy with seven shots and four on goal without any luck. Servin led an overpowering Northirdge attack that outshot visiting Gonzaga 27-10 but still found itself tied after regulation on a day when the emperature hovered near the 100-degree mark all day with a high of 104.
The Matadors (4-1-1) jumped on the board first with freshman Gianni Facio scoring his first collegiate goal at 19:58 with assists by freshman Will Beard and sophomore Juan Guerrero. Despite being outshot 15-4 in the first half, the Bulldogs (2-5-0) entered halftime tied after Connor Quinn scored at 43:03 on an assist by defender Tryggvi Bjornsson.
The Northridge defense proved why it entered the week ranked second in the nation in goals against average by keeping Gonzaga in check much of the day and holding the Bulldogs without a shot in overtime. Matador goalkeeper Joe Barton finished with four saves while allowing only his third goal in five games.
Gonzaga was led by sophomore Arni Pjetursson who accounted for half of his teams shots, finishing the game with five shots with four on goal. McCarthy grabbed nine saves.
