SPOKANE, Wash. - Annie Hawkins scored her fifth goal of the season to lead the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (5-4-0) to a 1-0 shutout over the San Jose State University (2-6-1) in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Martin Field.
A. Hawkins gave Gonzaga the lead at 68:37 when she took a left cross from Jesse Torres to tuck a shot into the lower right side of the goal.
The win brings the Bulldogs to a 5-4-0 record marking the first time in program history that the women's soccer team has a win record over .500. The victory also marks the first time the Bulldogs defeated the Spartans in five meetings.
The two teams struggled in the first half with four shots each before the Bulldogs came on in the second half to tally eight shots to the Spartans four. Gonzaga finished the match out-shooting San Jose State 12-8.
Emily New led the Spartans with four shots while Jessica Korpela had two. Both A. Hawkins and Heidi Jacobson collected four shots each before A. Hawkins recorded the game-winning goal.
Bulldog goalkeeper Ashley Haugen posted her fifth shutout as she picked up four saves. Goalkeeper Erin Lavey recorded six saves for the Spartans.
Spartans head coach Tamie Grimes was issued a red card in the 82nd minute and ejected for the remainder of the match.
The Bulldogs return to action at home Friday against Eastern Washington University at 2 p.m. The match is the first of doubleheader as the GU men play the Saint Mary's Gaels at 4 p.m.
