SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University head baseball coach Mark Machtolf has announced the signing of two Spokane players to play for the Bulldogs in the 2005 season. Signing national letters of intent with Gonzaga are Shadle Park High School third baseman Darin Holcomb and Mead High School utility player Dan Ramsay.
Holcomb comes to Gonzaga after helping to lead Shadle Park High to a fourth-place finish in the 2003 Washington State Baseball Tournament. The right-handed hitting third baseman is a two-time first team All-Greater Spokane League selection. Holcomb ranked among the GSL leaders in all offensive categories hitting .405 on the season with five homeruns in a four-game stretch that helped propel Shadle Park Highlanders into the GSL title.
Ramsay signed with the Bulldogs as a switch-hitting catcher who originally hails from the Sacramento, Calif., area. Ramsay moved to the Spokane area prior to starting his senior season and currently plays football for the Mead Panthers and will play baseball at MHS this spring. Ramsay can play a variety of positions but will most likely be a catcher at the college level. Playing three seasons at Rocklin High School he earned first team All-Sierra Foothill League honors as a freshman and junior. Ramsay hit .505 with 6 homeruns and 24 stolen bases as a junior helping to lead Rocklin High to the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Sectional playoffs. Ramsay has been invited to the Area Code Games on two occasions following his sophomore and junior seasons.
