Women's Basketball Falls In Season Opener

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Sophomore forward Ashley Anderson scored 17 points, but Gonzaga University women's basketball was unable to match University of Houston's Chandi Jones as the Cougars defeated the Bulldogs, 66-54, on Friday, Nov. 21 in the first day of the University of Iowa Hawkeye Challenge.

Anderson led Gonzaga (0-1) with team-high 17 points and six rebounds, joined by junior Ashley Burke in double figures with 13 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Houston's Sancho Lyttle and Jones ran the game for the Cougars (1-0) as Lyttle scored her first double-double for Houston with 19 points, 10 rebounds. Jones scored a game-high 25 points putting her within 10 points of a career 2,000 points goal.

Gonzaga came out fighting early as they went on an 8-2 run to start the game. The Bulldogs exchanged the lead with Houston seven times by the 6:07 mark in the first half, when the Cougars took the lead for the remainder of the game. Burke led the game with five points at the half as Houston held a four-point advantage.

The Cougars controlled the second half as they quickly jumped out to a seven-point lead. The Bulldogs fought back as they went on an 8-3 run early in the half. Houston couldn't be contained however as they retaliated with a 10-0 run over a 2:14 period of time.

Gonzaga brought the game back within seven points, but couldn't hold on as they were defeated by a 12-point span with 11 turnovers in the second half.

Despite the outcome, the Bulldogs and Cougars matched field goal percentage at 50 percent (12-24, 15-30, respectively), but Houston captured the shots from downtown with 67 percent (2-3) in the second half compared to Gonzaga's 29 percent (2-7). The Cougars scored 32 points off the Bulldogs' 23 turnovers.

Gonzaga contines the Hawkeye Challenge on Saturday, Nov. 22 as they take on Butler University at 5 p.m. for the consolation round in the Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
