IOWA CITY, Iowa - Freshman Rachel Kane hit her first four collegiate free throws in the last minute of the game to ensure a regulation 65-59 victory for Gonzaga University (Zags) over Butler University (Bulldogs) in the consolation game of the Hawkeye Challenge at University of Iowa on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Ashley Burke led the Zags (1-1) with a game-high 22 points. Junior Raeanna Jewell and sophomore Ashley Anderson came out on top for Gonzaga also with 12 points and six rebounds each. Anderson also had a game-high four blocked shots for the Zags.
Kane, in her first collegiate start, ended the game with seven points, four rebounds and two steals.
Butler's Lisa Pryor led the Bulldogs (0-2) with 13 points, followed by Cortney Urquhart and Dionne Goodwin with 21 and 11 points, respectively.
Gonzaga took the lead early with a 19-3 run to start the game. The Zags had 14 points off of the Bulldogs' eight turnovers in the first half. Burke notched 12 points in the first half as the only player in double digits and the Zags held an eight-point lead to start the second half.
Gonzaga maintained its advantage, leading by over 10 points six times throughout the second half. However, Goodwin started the momentum for the Bulldogs with her free throws with 2:32 left in the game as Butler chipped away at the Gonzaga margin.
With 0:43 on the clock, the Bulldogs had brought the game within two points, 59-61, as Angel Mason brought Kane to the foul line for her first free throw attempts of her career. Kane, a native of Kaneohe, Hawaii, sank her first two and then the second set as she was brought to the line again with three seconds remaining in the game.
Despite the Butler effort, the Bulldogs were never able to take the lead at any point in the game and the Zags celebrated their first victory of the 2003-04 season.
Gonzaga shot 57.5 percent from the field (23-40) while Butler struggled with 37 percent (20-54). Free throws made the game as the Zags hit 16-18 and the Bulldogs had 14-22.
Gonzaga returns to action as the Zags head back to Spokane, Wash., for their home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 25 when they host No. 24 University of Oregon in The Kennel at 7 p.m.
