THIS WEEK: The Gonzaga University women's basketball team continues its six-game homestand this week with two games at The Kennel and one at the Spokane Arena as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. The Bulldogs will first host Seattle University on Monday, Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. at The Kennel. Gonzaga will then take on Eastern Washington University on New Years' Eve at 2 p.m. at the Spokane Arena. The men will also take on the Eagles at 5 p.m. after the women's game. The Bulldogs then return to The Kennel to host University of Montana at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 4.

BULLDOG DEJA VU: The Bulldogs evened out their season start with three victories over Dec. 10-14 to bring their record up to 5-5. The Gonzaga University women's basketball team mimics last seasons' team with the 5-5 season start en route to a second-place tie in the West Coast Conference and an 18-12 record to end the season. Last season, the Bulldogs faced Boise State on Dec. 29 in an 82-55 victory to bring the record to 6-5. All of the Bulldogs' wins continue to come when then team scores 65 points or more for the entire game.

SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS: Gonzaga University hosts Seattle University in to continue the Bulldogs' six-game homestand on Monday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. in The Kennel for the first time since 1986. The Redhawks travel to Gonzaga coming off two-straight losses to California State University schools. Seattle University was first defeated by Cal State Stanislaus, 69-93, then by 13 to Cal State Bakersfield, 64-77. Sophomore transfer Nikki Pewitt leads the Redhawks in scoring with 13.7 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game. Seattle University also looks to senior guard Marisa Young to lead the team with 3.8 assists per game and 5.0 points per game.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES: The Gonzaga University women's basketball team hosts Eastern Washington University at the Spokane Arena for the first time of the season in a doubleheader with the men's basketball team on Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. The men will also face the Eagles on New Years' Eve at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs host Eastern Washington after winning the two previous meetings, most recently a 71-64 victory last season. The Eagles return senior forward Kathleen Nygaard to lead the team with an overwhelming 21.5 points per game, more than double any other member of the team. Nygaard also averages 8.8 rebounds per game. Eastern Washington also looks to junior guard Stephanie Ulmer for the offensive edge as the only other player to average double-figure points with 10.9 per game.

SCOUTING THE LADY GRIZ: The Gonzaga University women's basketball team return to The Kennel as the Bulldogs host University of Montana on Sunday, Jan. 4 at 1 p.m. in the last game before conference play begins. Gonzaga has won three of the last four meetings with the Lady Griz over the past four seasons. The Lady Griz most recently come off a 25-point win over Saint Mary's, 74-49, but host their Holiday Classic on Dec. 28-29. Montana boasts junior center Hollie Tyler with 13.9 points per game and 7.7 boards per game. Tyler currently leads the Big Sky Conference with 2.0 blocks per game. The Lady Griz also look towards senior forward Julie Deming to lead the team with 13.8 points per game and 2.78 assists per game.

MATHEWS NAMED WCC CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Gonzaga University junior Shannon Mathews was named West Coast Conference Co-Player of the Week for women's basketball for the week of Dec. 15. Mathews scored 38 combined points over three games to lead the Bulldogs to three-straight wins. The Riverside, Calif., native averaged over five assists per game and 3.0 rebounds per game. Mathews hit her first double-double of the season against UC Riverside on Dec. 14 as she scored 10 points with 10 assists. The junior currently has 43 assists on the season and holds the fourth-place slot with 305 career assists in the Gonzaga record books.

BULLDOGS ARE GOING STREAKING: The Gonzaga University women's basketball team establishes its longest win streaks of the season. The Bulldogs hold a three-game win streak with their victories over Boise State University, Portland State University and University of California, Riverside. Also, Gonzaga established a two-game home win streak while hosting the Broncos and the Highlanders. The Bulldogs look to extend these streaks as they continue their play with four home games in The Kennel over the next five games.

CHASING THE RECORD BOOKS: The Bulldogs find themselves in the Gonzaga University women's basketball career record books, looking to advance up the prestigious ladder. Juniors Shannon Mathews and Raeanna Jewell share top ten spots in three-pointers made and three-pointers attempted. Mathews shares the fourth-place mark with 116 three-pointers made with assistant coach Jennifer Mountain and Jewell continues to climb the ladder at No. 7 with 69 made. Mathew also is in the top five in three-pointers attempted at No. 4 with 358. Jewell is in sixth place with 244. Mathews looks to advance her status with another career record as well with 305 career assists, establishing her fourth-place claim in the record books. Senior Anne Bickelhaupt also looks to advance her position of fifth-place with 97 blocked shots in her career. Bickelhaupt needs only five more this season to advance to fourth-place.

DOUBLE-DOUBLES ALL AROUND: The Gonzaga University women's basketball team had players with double-doubles in two-consecutive games for the first time this season. Sophomore forward Ashley Anderson marked the first double-double of the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds in the Bulldogs' 69-60 victory over the Vikings of Portland State University on Dec. 12. Junior guard Shannon Mathews then acheived her own double-double with 10 points, 10 assists as Gonzaga defeated UC Riverside, 68-54, on Dec. 14. These were the first double-doubles in the season, and the two led the Bulldogs to consecutive victories.

STARTING FRESH: Gonzaga University women's basketball team's freshmen class is stealing the show with Rachel Kane, Stephanie Hawk and Katy Ridenour all making regular appearances on the hardwood. Kane, a 5-7 guard from Kaneohe, HI, has established herself as the only freshman this season that has started a game, as well as second on the team with 295 minutes on the court. Kane has averaged 5.9 points per game, with 3.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game so far this season. Ridenour, a 5-11 guard from Post Falls, Idaho, has been a critical player off the bench for the Bulldogs, playing in all 10 games so far this season. Ridenour averages 3.3 points per game, with 1.8 rebounds per game. Hawk, a 6-3 forward from Ontario, OR, also serves up height off the bench for Gonzaga. As the second tallest woman on the team, Hawk looks make an impact on the Bulldogs' inside game averaging 3.7 points per game and 1.6 rebounds per game.

BULLDOGS SECOND IN WCC POLLS: The Gonzaga University women's basketball program was selected to finish second in the West Coast Conference preseason coaches poll released by the league office. The Bulldogs are coming off a 18-12 record, their best campaign since appearing in the 1994 Women's NIT with a 21-10 record. The Pepperdine University Waves lead the poll with Loyola Marymount University following behind the Bulldogs in third.

ZAGS TO BE BROADCAST ON FOX TV: The Gonzaga University women's basketball team will make its first appearance on FOX Sports as part of the 27-game 2003-04 schedule. The Bulldogs look to make its first commercial broadcast on FOX Sports regional TV from The Kennel in the last home game of the season against University of San Francisco on Feb. 15. This historic game also signifies the last women's basketball game to be played in The Kennel before play opens in the new Gonzaga arena, currently under construction and scheduled to open for 2004-05 season.

BULLDOGS INK TWO FOR 2004-05: The Gonzaga University women's basketball program announced on Nov. 12 that a pair of student-athletes, Elaina Renius and Sarah Schramm, have signed National Letters of Intent and will enroll at Gonzaga as freshmen in the fall of 2004. Renius, a 6-4 native of Grants Pass, Ore., enters her fourth year on the basketball squad at North Valley High School after leading the team to the Oregon state tournament the past two years. Schramm, a 6-0 forward from Chelan, Wash., will enter her fourth season of play at Chelan High School. Schramm averaged 18 points and 13 rebounds as a junior, leading her team to a Central Washington Athletic Conference Championship and Washington state semi-finals. For her efforts, she was named first team All-State for the second time.

GRAVES NAMED 2003 WCC COACH OF THE YEAR: The 2002-03 Gonzaga University women's basketball team (18-11, 9-5) continued its winning season with the selection of head coach Kelly Graves as the West Coast Conference Coach of The Year. Graves was named the Coach of the Year after guiding the Bulldogs to a second place tie with Santa Clara in the WCC standings. Graves led Gonzaga to an 18-11 mark after finishing eighth in the WCC during the 2001-02 season with an 11-18 record. He collected his 100th career-win on Mar. 1, 2003 as the Bulldogs defeated the San Diego Toreros 86-72. Graves becomes just the second Gonzaga head coach to win Coach of the Year, joining Julie Holt who captured the award in 1994.
