TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State University erased an early Gonzaga University lead with a 7-run third inning and a 6-run fifth inning Monday night on the way to a 17-5 non-conference baseball victory at Packard Stadium.
The loss was the fourth for the Bulldogs in as many outings this season following a 0-3 start at the Coca-Cola Surprise Spring Training Classic held Friday through Sunday at nearby Surprise, Ariz. Fourth-ranked ASU upped its record to 18-1.
After ASU took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a pair of RBI sacrifice flies, the Bulldogs responded with a 3-run second to grab the lead. Kemp Quackenbush had a one-out single up the middle and Grant Zurmely followed with a walk. Junior Chris Sinner's two-out double down the left field line scored Quackenbush, and Brad Welker followed with a two-run double to left.
But the Sun Devils sent 13 men to the plate in the third inning. Gonzaga starter and loser Sean Lichter, making his return to the mound after undergoing Tommy John surgery that sidelined him for 2002, departed with the bases loaded after an error, a single and two walks plated one run. But ASU second baseman Steve Garrabrants greeted Bulldog reliever Kris White with his second grand slam home run of the season. Rod Allen also had a 2-run round tripper off White.
After a pair of runs in the fourth, the Sun Devils sent 12 men to the plate in the 6-run fifth. Garrabrants had a two-run double to left center field and Tuffy Gosewich drove in a pair of runs with a single to spark the Sun Devils. Garrabrants finished with a career-high six RBI.
The Bulldogs pushed across single runs in each of the last two innings. Quackenbush led off the eighth with a double down the right field line and later scored on Sinner's single to center. In the ninth, David Johnson led off with a double to right field and later scored on Danny Evans' single.
Despite scoring 17 runs the Sun Devils got just 11 hits off six Gonzaga pitchers. But the mound corps walked 10 and the Bulldogs defense was guilty of six errors.
Quackenbush went 3-for-4 for Gonzaga and is now 7-for-13 for a .538 batting average this season.
Gonzaga will return to action Friday at 2 p.m. in the first game of a three-game weekend series at the University of Washington.
