SEATTLE - For the second consecutive day Gonzaga's offense had a big day against the Washington pitching staff as the Bulldogs pounded out 15 hits during a 16-1 win over the Huskies at Husky Ballpark. Gonzaga improved to 2-4 on the season while Washington lost its fourth straight game to fall to 3-5 overall.
Gonzaga jumped out a 2-0 lead in the first inning as David Johnson drove home the first of his five runs with a single to left field to score Gordon Corder. Corder drove home the game's first run with a double to right center. Johnson tacked on the Bulldogs next two runs in the third inning when he connected for his second home run of the season off Washington starter Clay Johnson (1-2).
The heart of Gonzaga's batting order put the game out of reach in the fourth inning as Jeff Culpepper, Corder, Johnson and Kemp Quackenbush all drove home runs in the Bulldogs six-run outburst. Culpepper drove home two runs with a single to center and Johnson finished off his run producing day with a two-run double down the left field line.
That would be all the offense Gonzaga starter Eric Dworkis would need as he pitched seven complete innings to improve to 1-0 on the season. Washington's lone run of the game came against Dworkis in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Mike Wagner. Wagner would be the lone Husky with two hits as the Bulldogs staff limited Washington to just six hits. Gonzaga relief pitcher Nate Williams tossed the final two innings.
Corder and Johnson each finished the day 3-for-4 with Corder adding four RBI including a two-run home run in the sixth. Culpepper, Quackenbush and Danny Evans also added two hits for the Bulldogs.
Gonzaga and Washington will conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Husky Ballpark.
