PORTLAND, Ore. - Ashley Burke sank a career-high 29 points and Anne Bailey grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds as the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (16-11, 7-5) defeated the University of Portland Pilots (10-15, 4-8) 64-50 Saturday night in West Coast Conference action at the Chiles Center.
Burke paced Gonzaga with 18 of the Bulldogs 29 first-half points while Bailey grabbed 12 rebounds in the first half of play. Freshman Katie Prichard came off the bench to hit two crucial free-throws in the last two minutes of the first half before Ashley Anderson scored a jumper to tie the game at 25-25 with less than one minute remaining.
The two teams tied five times while switching leads three times before the Bulldogs took the 29-27 halftime-advantage on a last second jumper from Triana Allen. Gonzaga continued to build on their first-half lead through the bulk of the second half before pulling away by as many as 16 points and securing the 64-50 victory.
Allen chipped in 13 points and grabbed four rebounds for the Bulldogs. Burke hit 10-for-15 from the field and 9-of-11 from the free-throw line. Gonzaga finished the night shooting 44 percent from the field, 27 percent from three-point territory and 76 percent from the charity stripe.
Bailey's 20 rebounds tied a Gonzaga individual game record that was set in 1982.
Jamie Medley paced the Pilots with 15 points while Ashlee Giles added 10. Portland shot 24 percent from the field, 21 percent from the behind the arc and 85 percent from the free-throw line.
Saturday's contest marked the last road game for Gonzaga as the Bulldogs return to the Kennel Thursday night against the Santa Clara Broncos at 7 p.m. Gonzaga wraps up the regular-season schedule Saturday against University of San Diego Toreros.
