FRESNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University junior left-hander Ed Clelland scattered 5 hits Monday afternoon as he pitched a complete game shutout against Bowling Green State University (1-3) during first day action at the Pespi/Johnny Quik Baseball Classic in Fresno, Calif. Clelland struck out 10 batters as he no hit the Falcons until the fifth inning during the Bulldogs 1-0 victory. The win snapped Gonzaga's three-game losing streak as they improved to 5-9 on the season.
Gonzaga manufactured the game's only run in the bottom of the first as Chris Sinner beat out an infield single to second. He then advanced to third base on an error by Falcons shortstop Jimmy Lipari on a ball hit by Gordon Corder. Jeff Culpepper would then drive home Sinner with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Kyle Knoblauch (0-1) was the hard luck loser for Bowling Green as he scattered only four Gonzaga hits with six strike outs. Clelland improved to 1-0 on the season as he tossed only the second compete game of his career and the first career shutout. The 10 strike outs are also a career high for the lefty who worked out of two late jams to get the win.
Bowling Green threatened in the eighth and ninth as Clelland struck out Nolan Reimold with bases loaded in the eighth. The Bulldogs then made two solid plays at the plate in the ninth as pinch runner Jayson Selgo was out at the plate on a fielder's choice and then Kevin Longstreth was gunned out at the plate by Eric Rodland after a bloop single to right by Dash Yost.
Sinner, Corder, Culpepper and Nick Froman accounted for the Bulldogs four hits on the afternoon. Gonzaga now plays North Carolina Asheville on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. before wrapping up pool play on Wednesday against Cal Poly.
