LEWISTON, Ida. - Sophomore right hander Eric Dworkis shut down the Washington State (3-10) offense on Sunday morning as the Gonzaga Bulldogs (4-6) won their final game of the 2003 Banana Belt Classic, 10-0, over the Cougars. Dworkis improved to 2-0 on the season with eight shutout innings as he lowered his earned run average to 0.43 over three starts.
What started out as a pitchers duel during the first two innings was turned into a one-sided offensive game for the Bulldogs as Gonzaga scored three runs in the third inning. Chris Sinner started the Bulldogs scoring as he laced a ball into left field to score Kemp Quackenbush for the first of Sinner's three hits on the day. Gordon Corder drove home the next two Bulldogs run as he followed Sinner with a bases loaded single to left that scored two.
Gonzaga increased its lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning as Danny Evans led off with a walk against WSU starter Aaron MacKenzie (0-3). Sinner would connect for another RBI single to left to score Evans and chase MacKenzie from the game. Corder greeted Cougars reliever Brandon Hundt with a deep double to center that scored scored Sinner.
After two more Bulldogs runs in the seventh Corder capped his 4-for-5 day at the plate with a two-run home run to left center. Corder finished with five RBI on the day and eight RBI on the weekend. Eric Rodland, David Johnson and Nick Froman would also add hits for Gonzaga which had 10 hits for the game. With his single in the eighth inning Rodland moved into sixth place on the Gonzaga all-time career hits list with 223 hits.
Dworkis was dominant during his stint on the mound as he scattered eight hits and struck out six Cougar batters. Only two WSU batters even reached second base against the Bulldogs starter. Nate Williams pitched the ninth to close out the contest.
Washington State scattered nine singles in the game as they finished the Banana Belt Classic with a 2-2 record. Gonzaga finished the tournament with a 2-1 mark and will now return home to face Pepperdine this weekend in the West Coast Conference opener for both clubs. Start time for Friday's contest is 2 p.m. with Saturday's double-header scheduled to start at 11 a.m. at August/A.R.T. Stadium.
