San Francisco Sneaks Out 4-3 Win Over Baseball

SPOKANE, Wash. - The University of San Francisco Dons (14-24, 7-9 WCC) took advantage of ten Gonzaga Bulldogs walks on Friday afternoon as the Dons scored one run in the top of the ninth to pull out a 4-3 West Coast Conference victory at August/A.R.T. Stadium in Spokane. Gonzaga fell to 15-17-1, 4-9 in the WCC despite doubling the Dons hitting totals.
San Francisco collected their first hit of the game as Nick Tarbat hit a double down the right field line to open the contest. He would eventually come around to score on a Jason Howard sacrifice fly after advancing to third on a passed ball.
The Bulldogs responded with two runs in the bottom of the first as Eric Rodland and Gordon Corder each had solo home runs against Dons starter Kevin Annis. Annis would settle down after that inning allowing only four more Gonzaga hits and no Bulldogs runs as he pitched 6.2 solid innings.
Gonzaga's wildness on the mound started in the second inning as two Ryan Sittauer walked and advanced to third on two wild pitches. Gonzaga starter Sean Lichter would get out of that jam unharmed but could not do so in the third as he was lifted after walking the bases loaded. John Gonzalez entered the game and walked Armand Gaerlan to knot the game at 2-2.
Gonzalez would give up an unearned run in the top of the fourth as Royce Fukuroku scored on a wild pitch after reaching on an infield error. Gonzalez would pitch five innings of relief allowing only the unearned run and one San Francisco hit.
The Bulldogs then manufactured a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth as Kemp Quackenbush beat out a ball bobbled by the Dons second baseman to load the bases. Dons relief pitcher Derek Tate (2-3) would walk Sam Hess with the bases full to tie the score at 3-3. Tate would get the win when San Francisco scored in the ninth on a Howard single to shortstop with the bases loaded. Josh Monroe (1-2) would get the loss after walking two batters to open the ninth.
Rodland and Corder each finished with two hits for Gonzaga as the Bulldogs had eight hits. San Francisco had four hits with Howard driving home two of the Dons four runs. The two teams will resume their three game WCC series on Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. start at August/A.R.T. Stadium.
