SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University Bulldogs (22-23-1, 10-14 WCC) won swept their third straight West Coast Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon after they swept visiting Saint Mary's College (18-28-1, 8-15-1) at Spokane Falls Community College. Eric Dworkis tossed his second consecutive shutout in the first game as Gonzaga rolled 14-0 and Eric Rodland drove home three in the nightcap 8-5 win.

In the opener Dworkis (7-4) held Saint Mary's in check all afternoon as he scattered five hits and struck out a career-high 11 batters in in tossing his second complete game shutout in as many outings. Dworkis is now 3-0 in last three starts with only one run allowed in his last 23 innings while setting down 30 batters on strikes.

Gordon Corder went 5-for-5 with five RBI in Saturday's first game.

Gonzaga provided Dworkis all the offense he would need on the afternoon as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first and second innings to jump out to a 6-0 lead against Gaels starter Gabe Palma (1-3). Jeff Culpepper and Gordon Corder each had RBI doubles in the first inning before each adding RBI's in the second frame. Sam Hess and David Johnson also had RBI hits in the opening two innings.

Gonzaga extended its lead to 11-0 in the fifth when Corder hit his second double of the ball game to drive home two more runs. Johnson followed with a two-run single to cap a 3-for-5 day at the plate. Corder would finish the afternoon perfect with a 5-for-5 game at the plate including four runs scored and five RBI.

Saint Mary's looked to return the favor in the second game as the Gaels scored three runs over the first two innings. Nick Conte drove home two in the first with a triple to left that was ruled a hit despite a Gonzaga argument that the ball was caught by Bulldogs outfielder David Johnson. Adam Bellows added a solo home run in the second to give SMC a 3-0 cushion.

Eric Rodland drove home three runs in the Bulldogs second game victory.

Gonzaga responded in the bottom of the second as they scored six runs against Saint Mary's starter Matt Yourkin (1-7), five of the runs being unearned after a costly Gaels error. Danny Evans reached on that error as he drove home the first Bulldogs run. Eric Rodland then delivered the big hit of the inning as he cleared the bases with a three-run double to center. Corder and Johnson would close out the inning with RBI singles.

Kevin Trochez worked 5.1 innings of relief for Saint Mary's as the Gaels made a late charge scoring two runs against John Gonzalez in the top of the eight to cut the lead to 7-5. Tim Spooner scored one of the runs on a double steal by Jeff Cunningham. Cunningham would come around to score on a Gonzalez wild pitch. Gonzalez would get out the inning to pick up his fourth save of the season.

Matt Reding (2-0) worked five innings to pick up the win as he left with a 6-3 advantage. Gonzaga added a single run in the sixth on an RBI by Jeff Culpepper and Brad Welker came around to score in the eighth as Corder laid down a bunt with Welker on first and the throw to get Corder sailed into the right field after Corder reached the bag.

Corder and Johnson each had three hits in the second game while Rodland drove home three. Delaney Gallagher, Bryan Byrne and Nick Conte all had two hits for Saint Mary's in the second game after Gilbert Gil had two of the Gaels five hits in the game one loss.

Gonzaga travels to Santa Clara next Saturday for a three-game WCC series with the Broncos at Buck Shaw Stadium.
