SPOKANE, Wash.- Junior Annie Hawkins became only the second women's soccer player in Gonzaga University history to score three goals to lead the Bulldogs to a 3-1 victory over Portland State University. The match also signified the first ever season opening win for Gonzaga women's soccer in program history.
The Bulldogs' offense came out strong as Hawkins put her first goal in the net just 17 minutes into play off an assist by junior Walker Loseno. Hawkins, a Salt Lake City, Utah, native shot the ball from the top off the box past senior Viking goalkeeper Joell Giger to put the Bulldogs on top.
Hawkins then found the top of the box just ten minutes later after a breakaway, to widen the gap for Gonzaga with a two goal advantage. To complete the hat trick, Hawkins managed to find the ball after a scrum just two yards from the goal in the 49th minute to seal the victory for the Bulldogs.
Junior midfielder Julie Forrest answered the third Gonzaga goal just one minute later as she rocketed the ball from 12 yards out past sophomore Bulldog goalkeeper Ashley Haugen, to avoid the shutout.
Hawkins tallied six shots on the day, while Gonzaga teammate Ashley Pryor totaled two shots and Walker Loseno made one.
Leading the offense for Portland State, freshman Sophia Mundy made five shots, while both Carly Sawhill and Julie Forrest made three for the Vikings.
The Vikings outshot the Bulldogs 16-9, but were unable to find the net more than once. Haugen tallied five saves for Gonzaga, while Giger notched zero and substitute keeper Niki Brooks saved one ball for Portland State.
The Bulldogs were whistled for 17 fouls, while Portland State had nine.
