UC Riverside Edges Out Women's Soccer, 1-0

RIVERSIDE, Calif. Sophomore Renee Scachetti scored the lone goal with only five minutes left in the game as UC Riverside edged out Gonzaga University, 1-0, on Friday afternoon. The Highlanders improved their record to 2-1, while the Bulldogs dropped to 1-1.
Scachetti scored her unassisted goal in the 85th minute, past the arms of sophomore Gonzaga goalkeeper, Ashley Haugen. This was Scachetti's first goal of the 2003 season.
Neither team could capitalize on an opportunity during the first half, as the teams were matched with ten shots each. UC Riverside ended the match with 22 total shots, while Gonzaga notched 17.
Juniors Annie and Sarah Hawkins led the offense, with four shots on goal each. Sarah Hawkins made six shots total on the day, while Annie Hawking made four. Junior Walker Loseno also made two shots on goal.
For the Highlanders, Scachetti controlled the offense with four shots, and Amber Plumlee and Lisa Jensen each made three.
Both team's goalkeepers were kept busy as Highlander freshman Tawny Poggio and Gonzaga's Haugen both tallyied 13 saves between the posts.
The Bulldogs continue to travel in California as they face California State University at Northridge on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 2:30 p.m.
