FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Gonzaga University sophomore outfielder Jeff Culpepper has been named the Most Valuable Position Player for the Alaska Goldpanners after hitting .328 for the season and leading the Goldpanners to an appearance in the NBC World Series. Culpepper earned All-Alaska Summer League honors and set a new team record with a 7-for-7 game against the Peninsula Oilers on July 23. A week later Culpepper was instrumental in the Goldpanners win over the Anchorage Bucs in a game that will be most remembered for a plane crash at Mulcahy Field that caused a 47-minute game delay.
Culpepper led the club on the season with 59 hits, 3 home runs and 29 RBI. His 10 doubles and .444 slugging percentage ranked second on the team. Culpepper was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in this year's draft but will return to school for his junior season after earned honorable mention All-WCC honors last year.
