SPOKANE, Wash. - Jaime Rendich notched one goal and two assists for Brigham Young University as the Cougars defeated the Gonzaga University women's soccer team, 4-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Martin Field.
BYU jumped out to an early lead as Rendich scored the first goal of the game in the 16th minute. Sophomore Bulldog goalkeeper Ashley Haugen was out of the goal from a previous shot when Rendich was able to touch the ball in off a pass from Ludia Ojuka. The score would remain close at 1-0 for the remainder of the first half.
The Cougars took control of the second half as Rendich crossed the ball to teammate Terra Bigelow to give BYU a two goal advantage in the 56th minute. Rendich did the same maneuver again for teammate Krissa Campbell in the 74th minute of play to put the Cougars up by three goals.
BYU was able to seal the victory as Annie Zwahlen scored in the 78th minute off a chip from Bobbi Tillotson to give the Cougars a 4-0 shutout.
Despite four goals, keeper Haugen notched seven saves during the 90 minutes. BYU keeper Ashley Smith tallied two, while replacement Natalie Evans marked none.
The Cougars outmatched the Bulldogs in shots, 18-8, but the scale was tipped the opposite way as BYU racked up 16 fouls, while Gonzaga ended the game with five.
Bulldogs Sarah Hawkins and Rachael Manning led the offense for Gonzag with two shots each, while Katie O'Brien, Christy Musser, Stacey Sarro and Brittney Fracolli held strong in the backfield.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 6-2-1, and the Bulldogs dropped to 3-4 in their second home game of the season.
Gonzaga will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 26, as they travel to Eastern Washington University to take on the Eagles at 4 p.m.
