Cal State Northridge Blanks Women's Soccer, 2-0

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- Cal State Northridge's Cindy Mallett and Elena Alvarenga each scored a goal as the Matadors shut out the Gonzaga University women's soccer team, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Matador Soccer Field. The Matadors improved to 1-2 on the season, while the Bulldogs dropped to 1-2.

Mallett recorded the first goal for Cal State Northridge early in the second half (49:15), nodding a header from five yards away past Gonzaga sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Haugen. Michelle McCollum was credited with the assist as the Matadors held a 1-0 advantage.

Alvarenga solidified the lead for Cal State Northridge as she scored her first collegiate goal in the 76th minute of the match. Matador Mallett started the chain as she passed the ball up the sideline to Wendee Lensing, who gave it to Alvarenga for the final score, 2-0.

Haugen recorded eight saves on the day for the Bulldogs, while Matador goalkeeper Jen Jasper tallied five.

Junior Annie Hawkins led the Gonzaga offense as she notched a game-high seven shots, while Natalie Hardin had three and Walker Loseno had two. Alvarenga led Cal State Northridge with six shots, followed by Mallett with five. The Matadors outshot the Bulldogs, 21-16.

Gonzaga returns to action next week as the women's soccer team traves to face Idaho State on Friday, Sept. 12 at 4 p.m.
