MORAGA, Calif - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team was able to end Gonzaga's three-game West Coast Conference win streak as they stunned the Bulldogs with a 60-48 on the Gaels' home court on Saturday evening.
Gonzaga (10-7, 3-1 WCC) had three players in double figures as sophomores Ashley Anderson and Anne Bailey led the team with 12 points each and junior Ashley Burke followed with 11 points. Bailey added seven rebounds, and Anderson added seven.
Saint Mary's (11-6, 3-0 WCC) only had two players with double figures with Triola Jackson dominating the game with 19 points and Serena Benavente with 13 points. Lauren Shaughnessy had four steals for the Gaels.
The Bulldogs hit the first shot of the game and went up over Saint Mary's, 4-2. However, that was the only lead that Gonzaga would see for the remainder of the game as they trailed for the following 37:30 minutes. The Gaels opened up a 23-18 halftime lead after holding the Bulldogs to 27 percent shooting in the first half.
In the second half, Gonzaga cut the Saint Mary's lead to 34-33 with 13:31 remaining in the game, but the Gaels answered with a 16-7 run to go up 50-40 with 8:38 left in the game and eventually sealed the victory with free throws and clutch shooting towards the end of the game.
The Bulldogs shot a devastating 34 percent from the field giving the Gaels plenty of opportunity as they shot 45.3 percent.
Freshman Rachel Kane was unable to participate in the contest as she tore her anterior cruciate ligament and medial crucial ligament in Thursday's 72-21 victory over University of San Francisco. She is not expected to return to the court until next season.
Gonzaga returns to action as they host University of Portland on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. in The Kennel.
