SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team started the day with upset on their minds but suffered a heartbreaking West Coast Conference loss to the fourth ranked University of Portland 1-0 Sunday at Martin Field.
With the win the Pilots move to 11-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in WCC play. The loss ends the Zags undefeated record on its home pitch and drops Gonzaga to 8-6-0 overall 0-0-1 in WCC play.
The Zags had several good looks at the net in first period. One of GU's best chances for a score came in the 12th minute when senior forward Walker Loseno found herself five yards out in a crowded goal box and hit a laser shot that hit the cross bar and bounced out of bounds.
GU dominated the time of possession in the first half however, it was the Pilots who found the net for the lone goal of the game. In the 46th minute Natalie Budge controlled a cross from Christine Sinclair and beat Gonzaga junior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen lifting the Pilots to a 1-0 victory.
Portland had a decisive edge in shots, 20-9 and in corner kicks 13-4.
Haugen recorded eight saves for the Bulldogs and her counter part Cori Alexander recorded three saves on the day.
Gonzaga will be back in action on Friday when they host Loyola Marymount University in a 12:30 p.m. WCC match at Martin Field.
