MORAGA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team had a good opening day at the Saint Mary's ITA Invitational in Moraga, Calif. Friday as the Zags had four singles and two doubles teams advance to the quarterfinals rounds of play.

In the first round of singles the Bulldogs dominated their opponents wining all but one match. Freshman Erin Humphrey defeated Caitlin Aloia from Saint Mary's College, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 and classmate Sydney Lederhouse handed the University of Nevada, Reno's Cailen Wachob a straight sets loss, 6-0, 6-3. GU's only loss in the first round came when senior Sirrah Williams was defeated by San Jose State University's Ashley Tavita, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.

Freshman Amanda Becker received a first round by along with teammate junior Kendall Bates.

In the second round of singles GU continued its dominance as all four Bulldogs advanced on to the quarterfinals round with wins. Becker handed SMC's Megan Schulman a loss in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Humphrey defeated the University of San Francisco's Michelle Duncan, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (2). Bates advanced to the next round when she defeated USF's Maile Smith, 7-6 (4), 6-3 and Lederhouse completed the singles dominance by handing SJSU's Stephanie Irwin a straight sets loss, 6-1, 6-1.

In the opening round of doubles play the Zags had two teams play with both advancing on to the semifinals round. The tandem of Bates/Williams defeated USF's Anna Skogerboe and Emma Taylor, 8-4. The other GU doubles team of Humphrey/Lederhouse handed USF's team of Cynthia Kitch and Tidik Laura an 8-0 loss.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday at the Saint Mary's ITA Invitational with the quarterfinals and semifinals rounds of singles and semifinals round of doubles play. The matches are scheduled to start at 8 a.m.
