SAN DIEGO, Calif - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team fell in a West Coast Conference match to the 25th ranked Toreros of the University of San Diego in overtime Sunday at Torero Stadium 1-0.
After the teams battled to a scoreless first period, and despite USD holding a decisive advantage in shots (21-8) and corner kicks (8-0), the Bulldogs had a great scoring opportunity midway through the second half when senior midfielder Sarah Hawkins was awarded a penalty kick. The shot went towards the lower left corner of the goal and was batted away by San Diego's freshman goalkeeper Karen Cook.
Three minutes into the overtime period the Toreros were able to hand the Bulldogs its second shutout in as many games when midfielder Veronica Ambort netted a rebound off a shot by Brittany Young.
Gonzaga's junior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen recorded nine saves in the loss for the Bulldogs and her counterpart Cook recorded two saves in picking up the win for San Diego.
The Bulldogs will be back in action Oct. 31 as they host Saint Mary's College in a 2 p.m. WCC match at Martin Field.
