Bay Named To Baseball America All-Rookie Team

DURHAM, N.C. -

Former Gonzaga University outfielder and current Pittsburgh Pirates rookie Jason Bay was named to the Major League Baseball All-Rookie Team as selected by Baseball America in its Oct. 25 issue. Bay who hit .284 with 26 home runs and 82 RBI in just 411 at-bats this season is considered one of the front runners for the National League Rookie of the Year which will be awarded following the World Series. Bay played two seasons at Gonzaga earned first-team All-West Coast Conference honors in both years while winning the WCC batting crown with a .388 average his senior season. He was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 22nd round of the 2000 draft and made his Major League debut with the San Diego Padres in April of 2003. He was traded to the Pirates on Aug. 26 of 2003.

Joining Bay on the All-Rookie team were catcher John Buck of Kansas City, first baseman Adam LaRoche of Atlanta, second baseman Aaron Miles of Colorado, third baseman David Wright of the New York Mets, shortstop Khalil Greene of San Diego, outfielder Matt Holliday of Colorado, outfielder Terrmel Sledge of Montreal, designated hitter Bobby Crosby of Oakland, starting pitcher Zack Greinke of Kansas City, starting pitcher Noah Lowry of San Francisco, starting pitcher Bobby Madritsch of Seattle, relief pitcher Akinori Otsuka of San Diego and relief pitcher Shingo Takatsu of the Chicago White Sox. Greene is considered the other leading contender for NL Rookie of the Year after the former Clemson University star hit .273 with 31 doubles and 65 RBI for the Padres. Both Greene and Bay were roommates when they were members of the Triple-A Portland Beavers in 2003.
