SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University's senior forward Walker Loseno scored twice and senior midfielder Sarah Hawkins scored once on Senior Day as the Bulldogs cruise to a 3-0 West Coast Conference win over Saint Mary's College in the final match at Martin Field for the 2004 season.
With the win the Zags secured their second consecutive winning season as they move to 11-8-0 overall and 3-3-0 in the WCC. With the loss the Gaels drop to 8-11-0 overall and 0-6-0 in the WCC.
The Bulldogs wasted no time in scoring as in the 17th minute Loseno recorded her first of two goals. Junior defender Stacey Sarro skied a cornerkick into the center of a crowded goal box and Loseno headed the ball into the back of the net out of the reach of Saint Mary's back-up goalkeeper Alicia Artuso to give the Zags the early advantage.
Then just before the end of the first period the Zags had two seniors connect for a goal for the last time on Martin Field when Hawkins tallied her fifth goal of the season. Senior defender Natalie Hardin launched a cross into the middle of the goal box which found the feet of Hawkins who hit a rocket shot past Artuso.
The Gaels almost spoiled the shutout for the Bulldogs in the 60th minute as SMC was awarded a penalty kick after GU committed a foul inside the goal box. SMC's Sarah Churchill took the shot for the Gaels, but her shot went wide right.
The Bulldogs put the game out of reach in the 76th minute when Loseno tallied her fifth goal of the season. Sophomore midfielder Beth Drollinger, recording her first assist, bended a pass into the goal box where Loseno put the ball in the back of the net.
"I think this was a great way to end my senior season at home," said Loseno. "I'm excited to end the home part of our season on a winning note."
Junior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen recorded six saves in picking up the win for the Bulldogs. Her counterpart Artuso recorded three saves in taking the loss for the Gaels.
The Bulldogs outshot the Gaels 17-15 and had a decisive 13-1 advantage in cornerkicks.
The Bulldogs will conclude their 2004 season on Sunday when they travel to play the University of San Francisco in a 1 p.m. WCC match.
