MOSCOW, Idaho - Freshman midfielder Jamie Blanche's unassisted goal in the 103rd minute snapped GU's three game losing streak as the Zags defeated the University of Idaho Vandals in double overtime 2-1 Friday at Wicks Field.
The Bulldogs got on the boards first in the 42nd minute as senior striker Annie Hawkins tallied her sixth goal of the season. Hawkins slipped behind the Vandals defense, corraled a skied pass from her twin sister Sarah Hawkins and launched a rocket shot past Idaho's goalkeeper Lindsay Smith to give GU the early advantage.
Idaho was able to even the score in the 65th minute when Lindsay Kihm slipped one past Gonzaga's junior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen.
The Bulldogs offense once again came alive as for the remainder of the period Gonzaga dominated the time of possession having several good looks at the goal, however were not able to get the ball into the net.
After the teams battled through one scoreless overtime period the Zags were able to put things away. At the 103:05 mark Blanche found herself on the left side of the goal box, controlled a deflected shot off the crossbar and hit a laser past Smith to give GU its eighth win of the season.
Haugen recorded three saves in picking up the win for the Bulldogs and her counterpart Smith recorded five saves.
The Bulldogs outshot the Vandals 19-12, and had a decisive advantage in corner kicks 16-3.
Gonzaga will look to continue its perfect 4-0-0 record on its home pitch on Sunday as they open West Coast Conference play against No. 4 University of Portland Pilots in an 11 a.m. match at Martin Field.
