Women's Tennis Has Good Day at Montana Fall Invitational

MISSOULA, Mont. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team had a good opening day at the Montana Fall Invitational in Missoula, Mont. Friday.

In the first round of singles play GU had two advance to the second round pf play. Freshman Amanda Becker notched a win over the University of Idaho's Kareen Konishi in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 and Senior Sirrah Williams defeated Montana State-Billings' Becky Fry 6-2, 6-2.

Junior Kendal bates was defeated in first round play by the University of Montana's Cheyne Ursich, 2-6, 6-2, 10-7. Classmate Sydney Lederhouse was also handed a loss by Montana's Jonna Schwartz, 4-6, 6-2, 10-4. Freshman Erin Humphrey dropped her match to Idaho's Efrat Leopold in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. GU's final loss of the first day of singles play came when senior Angela Fry was defeated by Leopold, 6-1, 6-3.

GU dominated in the doubles competition as two of the three GU teams picked up first round wins. The team of KendallBates/Williams defeated Idaho's Konishi/Leopold 8-4. The Bulldog's Fry/Becker handed MSUB's Lehman/Roney a loss, 8-1. GU's third team had its match suspended due to darkness with the Bulldogs' Humphrey/Lederhouse leading Montana's Torgerson/Schwartz, 4-2. This match will continue on Saturday.

Round two of both the singles and doubles matches will continue play on Saturday at the Montana Fall Invitational at 10 a.m.
