SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Aaron Chandler scored his seventh game-winner of the season with 16:16 remaining in regulation to give the University of San Francisco men's soccer team a 1-0 win over Gonzaga University and with it the West Coast Conference championship.
Chandler, the sophomore from Riverside, took a pass from freshman Brandon McDonald and blasted it by Gonzaga goalkeeper Dade Smith from 10 yards for his 12th goal of the year. The Dons (14-4-1, 9-3 WCC) had peppered the Bulldogs (6-14-0; 2-10-0) net all day with 20 shots, but it wasn't until Chandler's tally that the Dons were on the way to their first conference title since 1994, and first solo crown since 1991.
USF was in control for much of the match, but saves by Smith and three balls knocked off the line by Gonzaga defenders, one in the game's first 10 seconds, kept the Dons off the board. On USF's defensive end, Geremy Uhl earned his fifth shutout of the season, all in WCC play.
The Bulldogs George Josten had a pair of breakaway chances that Uhl saved, including one that Uhl just got a hand on to deny the goal.
Smith had eight saves for the Bulldogs as nine of USF's 20 shots were on goal. He was making just his fifth appearance and fourth start of the year.
In losing 14 matches this season, the Bulldogs were shutout a school-record 13 times.
