BOISE, Ida. - Junior forward Anne Bailey came off the bench to score 10 points including a jumper with two-seconds remaining that lifted Gonzaga University to a 61-59 road victory over Boise State University on Sunday afternoon. Bailey grabbed a rebound off a Shannon Mathews missed shot and converted the gamewinner to end the Bulldogs season opening road trip with a 6-2 record. Gonzaga now returns home for seven straight games starting with next Saturday's home game against the University of Idaho at 3 p.m. in McCarthey Athletic Center.
Bailey, a starter through the first six games of the season, came off the bench to play 18 minutes and connect on 4-for-8 from the floor. Bailey had her opportunity come after Broncos forward Jamie Hawkins converted on only one of two free throws with 26 seconds left that knotted the game at 59-59. Boise State scored their final five points from the charity stripe as they converted on 16-of-22 free throws compared to only 11 free throw attempts for the Bulldogs.
Gonzaga once again played outstanding defense holding Boise State (3-3) to 28 percent shooting for the game. The Broncos were only able to stay in the contest on the strength of their offense rebounding and ability to draw fouls to shoot free throws. Boise State pulled down 22 offensive rebounds with Hawkins picking up three of her game-high 11 rebounds on the offensive end.
Senior Ashley Burke had her breakout game of the season for Gonzaga scoring a game-high 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Burke joined Bailey as the only Bulldogs players in double figures. Gonzaga combined to shoot 48 percent from the field scoring 48 of their 61 points in the low post.
Tasha Harris led Boise State with 15 points while Cassidy Blaine added 12.
