SEATTLE - Catcher Aaron Hathaway hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning Saturday afternoon to lead the University of Washington (4-1) to a come-from-behind win over the Gonzaga University Bulldogs for the second consecutive day at Husky Ballpark in Seattle. The Bulldogs (2-4) had built and early 3-0 lead but could not hold on as No. 23 Washington prevailed 4-3 to take the second game of the three-game series. Sunday's series finale will start at 1 p.m. at Husky Ballpark.
Gonzaga took advantage of the wildness of Husky starter Tim Lincecum as they scored the game's first run in the fifth inning on a bases loaded walk to Jackson Brennan. Gonzaga had loaded up the bases on two walks and a hit batter as Lincecum walked seven Gonzaga batters in 5.2 innings of work. Chris Sinner helped the Bulldogs again take advantage of Lincecum's lack of control in the sixth when he drove home GU's final two runs with a single to right. Aaron McGuinness and Marshall Bratton both scored on the play after reaching on a walk and hit batter.
Washington closed the gap in the bottom of the sixth as Greg Isaacson homered to right center against Gonzaga starter Ed Clelland. Clelland would surrender two more Washington runs in the seventh as Nick Batkoski singled home two with the bases loaded. Clelland would finish the seventh before turning over the game to the Zags bullpen.
John Gonzalez (0-1) would suffer the loss for Gonzaga giving up the Hathaway home run in the 11th inning. Gonzalez had worked 2.1 innings and allowed only one hit until Hathaway's game winning shot. Trent Baysinger was equally effective for Washington's bullpen with 3.2 innings of hitless relief as he improved to 1-0 on the season.
Gonzaga was limited to only five hits on the afternoon with Brad Welker collected the only extra base hit for Gonzaga with a double. Tyler Mach and Isaacson each had 2-for-4 days for Washington.
