Women's Hoops Loses WCC First Place Battle

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Sophomore Ashley Anderson and junior Raeanna Jewell each scored 16 points for the Gonzaga University women's basketball team, but the Bulldogs were overpowered by Loyola Marymount University as the Lions defeated Gonzaga, 70-58, on Thursday evening. The loss marked Gonzaga's second West Coast Conference loss, granting sole possession of first place to LMU.

The Bulldogs (13-8, 6-2 WCC) were led by Anderson and Jewell, with junior Ashley Burke scoring 10 points. Junior Shannon Mathews contributed nine points, a team-high seven rebounds, four steals and five assists for Gonzaga.

The Lions (16-5, 7-1 WCC) were led by Kate Murray with 20 points and seven rebounds while Adrianne Slaughter chipped in 14 points with a game-high six blocks. Jacquelyn Woods also put away 13 points during the game.

LMU led early with a 6-0 run, but Gonzaga kept pace and captured a 13-11 lead with 7:50 on the clock. After exchanging the lead several times, the Lions shot forward by seven points with 1:26 left in the half. The Bulldogs brought the score within two with a jumper by Burke and a 3-pointer from Jewell, but Gonzaga went into the second half trailing LMU, 29-27.

The Lions came out fighting at the 20:00 minute mark, but the Bulldogs retaliated by taking the lead with 14:05 with a layup by Jewell. Gonzaga kept the lead over LMU for nine minutes, but couldn't hold on as the Lions went on a 17-4 run and the Bulldogs missed seven of their last nine shots. LMU took the lead, and first place in the WCC, with a 70-58 win.

The Bulldogs shot 42.1 percent (24-for-57) from the field with 12 steals during the game. The Lions shot 48.2 percent (27-for-56) from the field and outrebounded Gonzaga, 38-26.

The Bulldogs remain on the road as they travel to Pepperdine University on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.
